Inside the Weird and Wonderful World of Sofia Lai
Переглядів 3092 години тому
If you feel a sense of grotesque when looking at artist and stylist Sofia Lai's work, you're certainly not alone. Uncanny yet equally (and delightfully) familiar, Lai's sculptures are never the result of one mood or inspiration. Instead, they're a collage of references taken from redolent memories, whether that be a passing comment Lai remembering her grandmother making or the posture of a man ...

so, this discussion is super relevant. I'm really increasingly missing the ultra-creative era that fashion experienced a few decades ago. today is just about money money money and product. That's why we see a lot more of the same. That's why we see few people doing really innovative and unique work. there are few real designers and many c&os and creative directors who specialize in strategies. which is different from a person who has well balanced both sides: the commercial and the creative. but what about SUSTAINABILITY, huh? I think you should bring this topic more to the panels. There is NO WAY we can go backwards and think about creating fashion with the same practices as 10 years ago. It doesn't make sense to have seasonal collections when the world is even more altered in relation to climate change. Why the only people worrying about this are small brands and independent designers while the big houses are still discussing old-fashioned things like filling us with products practically every month?

Karen Binns "paid her dues" being a club rat/bartender in the 80s, ass kissing Basquiat (keeps calling herself his muse with no other source, with only 2 photographs of the two in the same room), she was married to a comme des garcons employee which she claims is how she made Basquiat model for them. She also claims Lady Gaga copied her because of her work with Tori Amos (whom she claims to have worked in the 80s while Amos stated they met in 1991 but anyway) I don't wanna diminish her struggle as a black woman in the arts but I doubt she was carrying suitcases full of samples on the subway for no credit nor money for somebody else Being an unpaid courier does not teach shit, it doesn't make you "want it enough".... "get second job" I've seen interns being used till 3am to pack returns and back at 8am to drop them off, not even getting set experience, just free labour Something about being called Karen I guess....... Thanks to Michael Miller for being one of the few humans around. Brands always trying to cut budgets, yet there's always money for Vip to pay to be in and friends to have parties. Even Matches itself... how many ig stories have we seen of the same people at 5 Carlos Place, but no money to pay the stock they bought

I completely disagree with the glorification of being underpaid or abused. You're locking working-class people out of this system at a huge scale. There's a generational gap of morality on the panel and it shows massively. Running yourself into the ground and struggling without the chance of paying your literal rent is not a good look. Having to be far more talented because you're poor is not a good look. This is not whining either, this is the reality of why London fashion is DRY right now. We should unionise and stop obsessing over this by gone 90's era of fashion.

The woman in the pink top has one of the most bitter outlooks I’ve ever heard. Anyone who argues that, since they had to go through unnecessary bullshit to achieve a goal, others should be forced to go through the same unnecessary bullshit is backwards. This is the same idiotic argument made by boomers who want college students to be crushed under piles of debt simply because they were (to a much lesser extent, of course). Someone agreed with her saying that all the useless tasks teach punctuality and respect, and, again, that’s plain wrong. Why could punctuality and respect for the job not be taught by doing the job and showing up for the job? What is the actual point of entirely unrelated tasks being thrown onto someone who simply wants to practice a specific skill? All this sounds like is bitter people exerting their power fantasies now that they aren’t on the lower tier. 100% embarrassing. I cannot stand this lady.

26:29 I know this sounds silly but, as far a movie location aficionado, I was disappointed by this remark. Maryon Park is one of my favourite film locations. It's in London and Vanessa Redgrave, who lives in London, didn't even know if it still exists. It would have taken ten seconds to find the answer online, if she was interested. But I guess she isn't.
